During the hearing Justice Berry asked Ms. Hautanen, "Was there any other object in the apartment during this assault, vicious assault, long assault, was there any other thing that's like the telephone that the assailant had to have touched by logic? Because you couldn't get that wire without touching it."
 
Ms. Hautanen tried her best to dodge the question by mentioning the plastic bag. A full and complete answer to that question would have acknowledged that police failed to have that bag tested for fingerprints and if they did there is no known record of that. She would also have had to talk about the knife both the victim and Lt. Robert Hebert made note of, but which seemingly disappeared from the evidence in the case. Another piece of fingerprint evidence that seemingly disappeared from the evidence is the partial print on a Pepsi can Det. Carignan made note of in one of his reports (see below). The can is of significance because cans of Pepsi were reportedly strewn on the floor as part of the attack.
